Send Jansport Backpacks to the Retirement Home

October 21, 2010

When I think of Jansport bookbags, or even worse L.L. Bean. (remember when you had your initials embroidered on your pink bag?), I think of 6th grade. What was in then, is not still cool now. Yet still, I do spot this unfortunate back pack trend around campus; gets me to thinking: why?? Mind you, I don’t mind this accessory on men as long as the bag is fresh and in good shape, but spotting a girl with a Jansport or even a north face backpack makes me sigh.

Sigh:

Sweetie, this is college, not middle school

color overload

Girl looks like a Dude

When the whole campus is filled with those dull backpacks, an eery, and depressing feeling overcomes me. Especially when I see a flood of them.

Exhibit A

no color, no style, no fun

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

completely void of fashion sense

With so many choices of bags, leather and canvas totes, hobo bags, and the new trend of leather backpacks there is no excuse for looking sloppy when walking to class. You can still fit all of your 5 star notebooks and physics books into your bag. In fact, wearing backpacks often causes excessive shoulder strain; for this reason, messenger bags are the better way to go.

Thankfully I found some individuals who actually have style…doesn’t it just brighten up your day when you see someone with an original style, a put-together look, or someone who simply looks like they give a sh**.

Thank Goodness some people care.

I can’t claim to have the best school bag. I used to own a black Italian Leather tote complete with a laptop holder, silver hardwear, and patent leather accents. But since I carelessly toss my bags and over stuff them to their maximum capacity, it’s no wonder that after a year my abused bag finally had it: one of its handles ripped off on my way to class–sad and very inconvenient.

So, now I am in search of a perfect school bag. My quest has begun. Of course working with a limited budget (shopaholics are horrible at saving) poses some problems. Nonetheless, here are my top pics for sexy school bags:

1. Marc by Marc Jacobs Army Handbag Tote

$298 from shopbop.com

Roomy Inside

2.

Shop Around Large Tote in Grape $88 from Kenneth Cole

3.

and olive) $32 from Fred Flare”]

I didn’t forget about the guys either. Here are some bags that the men won’t be embarrassed to wear (they do not classify as man purses!)

1. Ben Sherman Canvas Messenger Bag

Canvas Messenger Bag with PU flap $89 from Ben Sherman USA available in brown and black

2. Fossil City Bag

Messenger Bag in Black $89 from Ben Sherman

3.

Risky Business Bag in Dark Brown $180 from Kenneth Cole

Consider your self style savvy with any of this bag. I would say that the men’s messenger bags are unisex— so you could borrow your man’s bag if you want (if he lets you!).

Hahaha! This is hysterical mainly because my boyfriend wears a Jansport backpack to LAW SCHOOL! And the worst part is he owns a J.Crew messenger bag. He says not everything will fit in the messenger bag. I tell him he looks like he’s heading to the 5th grade with his backpack. He doesn’t care… hah

    Hope all is well!

I agree that a lot of college students (even the older Grad students) go to school looking like they just rolled out of bed. Both the guys and the gals should try a little more.

But the “GIRL LOOKS LIKE A DUDE” snide remark was very immature, rude, and untrue. Truthfully, she looks like 99.99999% of all college girls who wear their hair in a bun or ponytail, a hoodie when the temperature drops, jeans and a plain ol’ backpack. I didn’t see anything “dudish” about her style.

And if you really want to tell it like it is, the guy who you said is “COMPLETELY VOID OF FASHION SENSE” seems like a thug wannabe with his gross inner city gangbanger style. That goatee that goes all the way up and connects with this sideburns is horrifically atrocious. He probably listens to Eminem! LOL.

Unfortunately a huge number of young men (and even older men in their 30s and 40s) are dressing that way across the nation, especially in New York city and South Florida. That’s probably a much bigger fashion crises than Jansport backpacks.
